Unlike most simulation and tamagochi styled games, where you constantly have to take care of your animals, this game does thing a little bit differently. In Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector you don’t have to keep an eye on your own pet, but instead can lure cats from the neighbourhood to your virtual backyard, by furnishing it to their liking!You can do this by going to the ingame shop, where you can purchase food, such as Frisky Bitz, Ritzy Bitz, Deluxe Tuna Bitz and countless other types of catfood, then place it out for the cats to eat once they arrive. But they will also want toys, so you have to get those from the shop as well. Toys can vary greatly: there are bouncy balls in different colors, balls of yarn, boxes, pillows, cushions, cooling mats, kitty tents and countless others! Some of these items can be purchased with the basic currency of fish, while rare items might cost the premium currency of gold fish.
Now, once you set up your backyard, you will soon find that cats start moving in at random times, starting with Snowball, the pretty white kitty, who is happy to play with bouncy balls. Once a cat has arrived, he or she will remain there for one or two hours, playing with one of the toys you put out, then they will go on their way again and another kitty might take their place! Don’t worry, if you liked one of these feline visitors so much, they will probably come back later on, if they enjoyed themselves!
Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector also has a collection aspect, as the title suggests. Once a kitty is in your backyard, you can take out the camera from the menu and take a picture. This picture will be added to an album, where you can see all the photos that you have of the same cat, as well as check out all others that you snapped so far. Any kitty that you meet will also be added to a Catbook, where you can see their Personality, Power Level, number of visits and the toys they used the most. Once you snap a special picture of them, their Catbook will also be updated with it.
Satisfied kittens will also leave fish behind once they leave your backyard, and there is a small chance that they will gift you with a memento, which can be collected and documented in a separate Mementos menu, just like the photos. Most cats will only give you a memento once they know you well and has visited multiple times.
If you don’t feel content with the names of the cats you meet, they can also be renamed to your liking, so when they return, you will recognize them more easily. Another similar customization option is to expand the backyard once you feel like it’s too small for all the toys you bought, making space for even more.
Since buying new toys and fancy food for the cats will be costy over time, there are in-app purchases to buy gold fish, which then can also be traded into fish, at a rate of 10 gold fish for 250 fish. 50 gold fish can be purchased for $0.99, while the most expensive option gives you 300 gold fish for $3.99
